Most of my clients are looking for homes with open concept kitchens, big backyards, and maybe a finished basement. But my newest buyers, the Attams Family, had something a little different on their wish list: cobwebs, creaking staircases, and a ghost or two included. Just in time for Halloween, I took them on a special house-hunting tour of Hamilton and Burlington’s most haunted spots.
Stop 1: Dundurn Castle (Hamilton)
We started with Dundurn Castle, a sprawling 1830s estate with over 40 rooms and sweeping views of Hamilton Bay. It checked a lot of boxes for Gomar and Mortina: historic charm, elaborate architecture, and plenty of drafty hallways. The bonus features? Phantom singing, sudden cold spots, and whispers in the dark. Wensley immediately claimed the attic for herself.
Stop 2: Custom House (Hamilton)
Next up was the Custom House, right in downtown Hamilton. With its stone façade and prime location, it had great bones — and one permanent tenant, the infamous Dark Lady. She’s been spotted in the basement and hallways, often leaving cold drafts behind her. Uncle Festor couldn’t get enough of the energy (or lack thereof). The family loved the idea of always having company, whether invited or not.
Stop 3: Joseph Brant Museum (Burlington)
Finally, we toured the Joseph Brant Museum. More compact than the others, but full of character. Elisa, the resident ghost, is known to flicker the lights — Mortina thought it was delightfully eco-friendly. Pugley especially liked the fact that it sat on the site of the old Brant Inn, a hotspot for music and dancing back in its day. Who doesn’t want a little paranormal nightlife with their property?
So, Which Haunted Home Will They Choose?
The Attams Family is still deciding — do they want the grandeur of Dundurn Castle, the eerie history of the Custom House, or the cozy creepiness of the Joseph Brant Museum? Luckily, Hamilton and Burlington have no shortage of hauntingly good options.
And while the Attams Family might be searching for ghosts, most families I work with are just looking for good homes with good bones. If you’re ready to start your own house hunt — haunted or not — I’d be happy to help you find the perfect fit.
Looking for a new place to call home this fall? Let’s talk. I’ll help you find one that’s full of memories, not mysteries.
